I remember when the media was convinced that kids would kill themselves if they listened to Metallica, especially Fade to Black. Now you can find Cattle Decapitation t-shirts at Hot Topic. Say what? I suspect the internet and cable tv are largely responsible for the walls of "evil" being torn down.

Great post! I really enjoyed reading it.

Myself, I'm not exactly sure when the Satan-panic ended... was it with the advent of the internet, or with the rise of the megachurches, when Satan fell out of vogue?

I love me a little Satanic music, but it really bugs me when someone takes the Satan stuff too seriously... and there really are a lot of people who still do!

Wow, that McMartin School thing is horrible. I never had heard about that! :/

Thanks, C. I think it just fell out of fashion. The Internet has killed a lot of the mystery, I think. Used to be you'd find a hundredth generation photocopy about Mickey Mouse LSD tattoos or the Procter and Gamble "Satan" logo stuffed in a library book. That made it seem a lot weirder and creepier for some reason. I blame bad site design. Hook 'em, Horns!

And if you thought McMartin was bad...

Well, I have a lot more past to remember than you do, naturally.
