It's vacation time. LJ always goes quiet the week before school starts in most areas, mostly because those of us who grew up are finally getting in some break time before things get insane after Labor Day. I've been here long enough to see the cycle. (Besides, if you start believing the cultural coverage in Time, it's a short hop to falling for whatever bullshit Singularity movement Bruce Sterling and Cory Doctorow are whoring over at Wired, and then we'll have no choice but to give you the Old Yeller treatment.
