I think I see Beryl as also being motivated by the desire to gain and hold power, not only to be loved. I do not see her as inherently evil, but she took a very wrong turn somewhere down the road, and then, when she found that the wrong ways can still lead to what she deems as the right result, she just continued and it sort of spiralled out of control from there.
But your character study was a lovely way of looking at her, and also, it kind of makes me want to give you a hug and some cookies. Because cookies make the world a better place.
And I don't deny there might have been power involved, but I guess I believe she could have found other methods to reach power had other things gone differently.

This honestly was not written to garner sympathy (though I do appreciate it), but more as a type of character study.
(Yes, I'm frustrated, but I'm not, right now, anywhere close to embracing chaos! I have friends and loved ones. I'm loved.)
