It's not the greatest ever, but it's a job. And it has a flexible schedule. And, hopefully, I'll be good enough that with tips and what not I'll actually get over min wage

1) By law if you're working, even "training", you get paid. Particularly in the restaurant business, where you're surrounded by machines that spew hot grease/hot water/industrial strength chemicals, knives, etc. etc. as long as you are in there working, you must get paid. There are hy00000000000ge liabilities for the restaurant if, say, you had an accident and were working, even training, without getting paid. And trust me, they'd rather shell out the wages than deal with million-dollar lawsuits. Only if you're too dumb to know better would they try to get away with that sort of thing

Congrats on getting a job! Sorry to hear about getting dismissed from teaching - I always thought there was a need for teachers but my cousin who teaches in Cali was laid off this past summer and it turns out the job market for teachers aren't as good as I had expected... I believe you will be paid for training since this is for work - so enjoy a week of boring work before you get thrown to the wolves :)
