Funny that they downplayed the Christianity when the entire soundtrack was done by contemporary Christian musicians with themes like "the angel is a lion" or "the lion is an angel" or something. 9I had to listen to it on the airplane earlier this month.)

I don't think they intended to downplay the Christianity. There are just little details, like the Prof.'s take on belief, that they apparently didn't get. And they put in a lot of WWII stuff, which was nice but it changed the focus of the story pretty drastically.
