In March I wrote a blog post “Rebel without a Cause” about my experiences with the Melville Residents Association regarding the removal of graffiti pieces from the boundary wall of the Melpark Primary School. The piece referred  to conversations I had with Cynthia Rose and a guy I called Mr. Jones and their negative views on graffiti and street ( Read more... )

I will have a guess that Rasty and his graffiti mates do not own property or even a wall. If they did they would realise that repainting a wall is very costly, as normal PVA does not cover enamel spray paint very well. The Melpark Primary wall was meant to be an underwater scene for the children, it turned out to be nothing more than narcissistic graffiti '@rti$t' signatures and a hint of an underwater turtle - are these'@rti$ts' so insecure that they have to get attention from the community by defacing property that does not belong to them. Mars, Taps, Chaos are a few other '@rti$ts' who like dogs mark their territory all over town from Randpark to Hillbrow, in an attempt to get noticed in the graffiti circles. Stop signs, historic buildings, highway bridges, telephone boxes, residents walls, road barriers, all splattered with un-artistic unconsidered child like rasoral like rubbish. Art - I don't think so. These guys want to get a name so they can create 'Pieces' or masterpieces like their local and international Heroes like Angel ( ... )

Thanks James - I'm not picking a fight and actually wanted to forward you the link to the blog post on Friday but our server went down unexpectedly - I respect you as an artist and I believe that you are also involved in some community work in Alex which I salute. I had a look at your recent exhibition at the Melville Community Center and it was great ( ... )

Hello again
Thanks for your response & the tone of your response. I think that we will get a lot further with level headed & solutions driven conversations re graffiti & it's application. I do still hold to my opinions as stated in my previous response re appropriateness, community rights & quality of work.
I am sure we will bump into each other on the streets of Melville soon.
Keep well
