Thanks for your fascinating first hand report! I don't think many England fans are blaming the vuvus for below par performances. The England team has long had a gift for producing them unaided.

The vuvu situation has shifted as the tournament progresses: the TV channels have adjusted their sound volumes and use more directional mikes, and games have seemed more normal without losing the vuvu backing.

My objection to vuvus was that they completely drowned out crowd reaction to the game, flattening the emotion. But over time the fans have come back into it. I'm not sure how the accommodation was made, but I'm pleased it was.

This World Cup is already a spectacular success for South Africa. You're sure to see a big boost in tourism. But I won't be completely happy until I see Nelson Mandela presenting the trophy. After that, I'll even buy a vuvu, as long as it's in South African rainbow colours.

Unfortunately Madiba will not be able to do this, political and physical it won't be wise. Our esteemed Prez, Jacob-showerhead-Zuma (If you don't know what shower-head refers to just Google Zaphiro)will hog the limelight with Blatter. Mr Mandela recently lost a granddaughter in a motor accident after the opening concert and is also physically very frail. I saw him on stage at one of the 46664 concert (I think in London) some two years ago and he was clearly disorientated and it made me me sad to see this great man herded on and off stage.

The Black Stars are through and a carrying the hopes of Africa with them. Must see if I can't find a Ghanaian scarf today. Uruguay seems one of the most organized teams in this cup but Ghana can beat them.
