Rule #1) If the actions of your character sometimes surprise yourself, your ref and the rest of the players, and yet are clearly understandable in hindsight, then all is well.

I like to remember that there are two sorts of stories going on in the game, the background stories of the environment, and the foreground stories of the characters growing up. Dave is full of beer, and full of magic, but, slowly, he's gonna start thinking. This might turn out to be a major event in his life.
As for Justin(e) Chandliere...pah...(s)he had plenty of chances to wise up and smell the cordite!
