Consider the rather wide-based pyramid of people who want to be broadcast journalists, and consider how transferrable the skills will be if you don't make it. IF they're transferrable, great - if not, think very carefully. Is broadcast journalism what you really want to do because of the work, or is it the "sexiness" you're after?
PS: The "Media Co-ordinator Attachment". Does that take batteries?
Hrm. That's a valid point to some degree. I already have some of the skills required to do broadcast journalism, and no I'm not especially driven to it by anything other than the fact that it earns more than the paid monkey work I'm doing at the moment. As for "sexiness", you have clearly met Very. Few. BJs. The Parly position would give me some of the skills I'd acquire as a media co-ord though - it involves using software used by both picture editors (Jupiter/Q-Cut) and BJs (CPS, Jupiter) - and the camera/editing work would also help me lay good picture editing groundwork. Hence why ideally I'd like to do both.
I'm also not sure if the media co-ord peeps would let me f*ck off for two weeks to cover the Olympics - I strongly suspect not.
You'd think not, but bear in mind that the Head of Broadcast Ops at Millbank still thinks we're called the Parliament Channel; people still scarcely believe we as a channel exist. OTOH, live Olympics coverage on the old CV would draw a fair chunk of water in meeja circles, I reckon...
If the High Panjandram Edwinbashi increased his personal magnetism any more, the orbital pattern of the planet would change and all electrical devices would cease to function. Women have become pregnant simply by gazing lovingly upon him. It is his ceaseless, godlike magnanimity that keeps the very Earth spinning as it should. All hail Edwinbashi!
Believe me, I'll be doing the interview! Suited, booted, confident and giving my all. I'm more amused than anything - I've never before been in a position where potentially I'd have my pick of jobs to go for. It's also a tremendous boost to be able to walk in there and know my situation has already been improved whether or not I get it, which should lift my confidence a bit more.
Thanks for all your help over the months, chap: free for a beverage and a natter sometime soon?
Don't believe it till you see it. Make a decision when you know you have a choice (i.e offer for both) - attend the interviewS for both like they are the only option else you may end up not showing your best at your 'less preferred' option...that aside I'd go for the one with regular hours so you can a) not go batsh*t b) start climbing again (like wot I am attempting to do here in Welly) c) have a predicatable social life.
Well, I definitely have one of them; naturally it won't be an issue until I've done the interview for the other and I know whether they're interested or not.
The regular hours are keeping me calm, as is the walkable commute. However, the less regular hours make it a lot easier to go climbing, perversely - the climbing centre is so insanely busy that going in the early afternoon is the only really viable option. The social life aspect is an important one, but I am already having to cut it back because of my lacklustre paycheque, which would be improved by the unsociable hours. Bit of a swine to juggle the two, really.

I meant sexiness purely in the PR sense - Edwinbashi would surely not need to enhance his already considerable personal magnetism...
