I'm new here; I followed a link from IMDB. (I wish I'd found it before I started reading Maurice and Alec in America). I have looked through the archives to make sure I'm not duplicating this, but don't see any mention of it. This is one of my favorite books:

So you started Maurice and Alec in America? How did you find it?

A Class Apart looks really, really cool. And... YES! It looks like my university library has a copy, so I will have to check it out soon... as in tonight. Thanks for the recommendation!

I'm not liking Maurice and Alec much. There was too much to "get over." I could deal with them being transplanted to America--but the author says in his introduction he deliberately makes them Americans--right down to their speech. Also, a big problem I had was his skipping over the Great War, but leaving them the same age??? Even if they hadn't fought in it, by 1924 it certainly would have marked their lives in some way.

My biggest problem though is that the author uses it as a platform for his own opinions. As a consequence, apart from sharing the same name, Alec is barely like the character in Maurice. That said, I will probably finish the book, just because I'm already 3/4 of the way through.

Man, based on that, I am totally not reading that book. It sounds like that book is to Maurice what Scarlett is to GWTW.

That was my impression exactly when I got a look at the book last summer, and it's sort of good to hear I was right, though it is disappointing - I was trying my best to give the thing a benefit of a doubt.
I don't mind the fact that the author basically wrote a novel to fictionalize his opinions - it's just that he used Alec and Maurice in the process.

Yes, I did read your post on Maurice and Alec in America---that's why I wish I'd found this community before. I wouldn't have bothered requesting it at the library.
