I re-read Maurice in the decadent aftermath of a Spanish exam, when I should have been reviewing something infinitely more academic, and found myself at the part where our favorite protagonist first has his dream about A Friend. This was followed by that delicious portion of the book that involves him and Clive and nothing more needs to be said, ( Read more... )

Welcome! :]
And these were exactly my feelings about this community, when I discovered it. It was also one of the reasons for me to return to LJ at all.

I know entirely what you mean. When I first read 'Maurice', when I read the bit about the 'friend', it was like something had fallen into place : it was THAT which I had been wanting, and THAT which I had to find. I can safely say that 'Maurice' is the only book I have ever read which can make me cry (the part at the end which talks about the 'ferns undulating' always finds me in floods : I can't even look at th margin on this community because of that!), scream (mainly at Clive. I adore him at the beginning and almost hate him towards the end), and feel real happiness (any scene involving Maurice being happy - I take this as a classic example of how well-written 'Maurice' is). You're right - this community is a blessing. Almost everyone I know is homophobic, so it's a rare thing to be able to discuss the book without being thought of as weird.

I'm really touched that you like this community so much. Being around homophobes is awful; I went to a school with lots of them. Before I left I gave the library a copy of Maurice, and I thought they were going to reject it, but the librarian kept it because she said it was by an important author. I hope it's still there. I hope someday soon you can get away from the homophobes and that you find your "friend". :)

I've had a similar experience, myself, Marauder. I did a public speaking exercise once in which I had to speak about something which changed my life. Obviously, 'Maurice' was the subject, and I thought I was going to be lynched after I'd finished (I think I did it to spite my sister : every time she sees me reading it, she makes some snide, homophobic comment). But, to my infinite surprise, one of my classmates asked to borrow it!
Miracles do exist, it seems.

I'm glad you're here, and that you like it so much so far. I hoped things like this would happen when I started this community. :D
