Summary: Seven month pregnant Jared lets Chad talk him into coming to his Halloween party where he meets Jensen who still doesn’t know that his former co-star and best friend is having his baby. Angst and general emotional chaos ensues.
"I’m not going to your party, man! Stop harassing me about it!” Jared leaned back against the sofa cushions heavily. The way he was gently stroking his well rounded baby bump did nothing to diminish the effect of him glaring daggers at Chad though.
“It’ll be fun. Man, it’s Halloween! I don’t know why you’re so against going out if I have the best costume ever for you. No one will guess that you’re knocked.” He was gesturing wildly while speaking.
Jared huffed in annoyance. “I KNOW you and I’m NOT wearing any costume you have chosen!”
“That really hurt, Jay!” Chad tried to look affronted but Jared seemed totally unfazed by his efforts. “C’mon, man, you have to get out once in a while. This is like that best chance ever to have some fun with the guys and not worry about anyone finding out about… your delicate condition.”
“Fuck you, Chad!”
“Sorry, but I don’t swing that way, Jaredina.”
The smug comment made Jared throw a sofa cushion at the blonde’s head.
“Ouch! How ‘bout trying to control those mood swings?”
“Don’t make me throw something else at you!” The pregnant man warned.
Chad sighed and sat down next to his friend. “Hey, you know I’m just trying to help you here. You’ve been hiding in here since you came back from Vancouver. That’s been three months!”
“I know.” Jared finally conceded.
“You have to get out because this is not healthy, man.”
“I know, but what happens if he turns up at the party, too?” Jared was getting more miserable with every word said.
Now it was Chad huffing in frustration. “Then you’ll talk and have a good time. It’s a party!”
“What if he makes a stupid comment and… You know I get emotional all the time now.”
“He won’t.” Being understanding wasn’t Chad’s strong suit but his friend’s slumped shoulders and sad puppy eyes were getting to him. “You didn’t tell him that you were seeing anyone, did you?”
“I’m not seeing anyone so why should I lie to him?” He was so depressed that he didn’t even see the hypocrisy in his statement.
After a few seconds of silence Chad cleared his throat. “You’re still keeping in touch?” A nod on Jared’s part made the blonde shake his head. “You know you won’t be able to hide the baby forever, right?”
Another weak nod and more silence until Jared finally changed his mind though still a little reluctant. “Okay, I’ll go to your party but if I don’t like it there I’ll leave and there won’t be another discussion.”
“Deal.”

A couple of weeks later Jared found himself in Chad’s guest bathroom looking at the contents of a bag which according to his friend contained the ‘best costume ever’ to conceal his pregnant stomach. “You gotta be kidding me!” He murmured to himself before shouting out into the main room. “CHAD!”
Moments later a blonde head poked into the bathroom. “You called for me, Mary?”
“Dude, I’m NOT wearing THAT!” He pointed at the blue and white silky material spilling out of the bag in disgust. Chad had told him that he would get him a costume so that he wouldn’t need to go shopping himself. “You PROMISED it would be a good disguise.”
“And it is!” The expression on Chad’s face was clearly confused.
“That’s a dress, dude!” He stated the obvious still pointing at the offending object.
“Yeah and YOU said there wouldn’t be another discussion when you agreed to come. Now put your costume on. I have to change before the other guests show up.”
*
Another half an hour later Jared was sitting at the bar and drinking a virgin Bloody Mary without Vodka or Worcestershire Sauce or Tabasco or even salt and pepper for that matter. It tasted just as good as it sounded and he kept telling himself how healthy tomato juice was in order to keep sipping it.
He leaned back against the counter exposing his protruding stomach. Once he had survived the first humiliating minutes after coming out of the bathroom he had soon stopped being embarrassed.
Jared was wearing a plain white full-length gown and an equally long light blue head cloth. He had no clue where Chad had found those things in his size. After putting the costume on and taking a first look at himself in the mirror he had instantly grabbed Chad’s shaver to make the crazed Sheikh looking back at him go away. As if all that hadn’t been enough his douchy friend had forced everyone on the party to wear a name tag and his read “I’m Mary”.
Apparently the costume really was a good disguise and he had even gotten a few compliments from people that came around and said ‘hi’. Jared smiled to himself. This seemed to be the first of Chad’s many moronic ideas to work out well. Suddenly a tall figure in a butt ugly brown frock caught his attention.
Jensen looked beyond mortified in his costume which was made out off a rough, knee length cloth held together by some rope around his waist. His pale and slightly bowed legs were sticking out of the gown and he was wearing Jesus sandals. As soon as he spotted Jared he started moving towards him through the crowd.
With each step his former co-star and best friend came nearer Jared’s heartbeat increased another notch. His palms were also starting to sweat and he could already feel the baby picking up on his discomfort and therefore starting to move around. He had to fight the urge to rub his extended belly through the flimsy material of his dress because Jensen was standing in front of him now.
An amused smile crept onto Jensen’s face as soon as he was done mustering his friend’s costume. “Guess Chad’s chosen your outfit, too.”
“Yeah. I’ll never listen to him again when he has one of his ‘best idea ever’-moments.” At least he was able to keep his voice steady. “Seems like he mixed up the Halloween with Christmas.” He pointed towards the ‘I’m Joseph’ sticker on Jensen’s chest.
Another frustrated laugh. “I gonna strangle him for stealing my shoes while I was changing.” He wiggled his naked toes making Jared chuckle. “Wanted me to wear this, too, but there are LIMITS to my patience.”
“Is that a wig?” Jared stared at the hairy thing in the other man’s hand quizzically.
“Wig and beard.”
They both cracked up laughing.

Another couple of hours later they were still laughing and generally having a good time. They had talked about almost all and nothing.
Jensen was getting a little tipsy because he had been drinking real Bloody Marys while Jared had kept mixing his own virgin ones unnoticed. With Jensen tipsy equalled mellow and that meant handsy. Completely out of the blue he leaned his head against Jared’s shoulder.
“Are you okay, Jen?” He was nervous but at the same time he had to admit that the proximity felt nice.
“Hmm.” The older man snuggled even closer with a stupidly happy smile on his face and suddenly laid a hand on his best friends protruding stomach. “Just checking on my baby.”
Jared froze and the baby gave an especially hard kick in response to him tensing up. Jensen might have been a little drunk but he had felt the baby’s movement and pulled his hand back looking up into his friend’s ghastly white face in confusion. “Jay?”
He gulped heavily but didn’t get any words out.
“Are you okay, Jay?” Now there was worry clearly evident and the slurred question.
The taller man still didn’t react.
Sobering up instantly Jensen palmed his best friend’s face gently trying to catch his attention. “C’mon talk to me.” He mustered the pale face framed by the blue silk veil. There were no signs of pain. “Let’s get you home, Jay.” Standing up he put both his hands on the other man’s shoulders and carefully lead him to the door.
Chad noticed the holy family moving through the crowd and went over to them. “What’s up?” His drunken smile vanished as soon as he saw the blank expression on Jared’s features. “Jay, what happened?” Getting no answer he spun around shooting Jensen an angry look. “What did YOU DO to him?”
“I just… It doesn’t matter. I’m getting him home before he gets even more worked up. I’ve got it covered.” Jensen was about to start walking again but an arm held him back.
The blond was surprised. “You KNOW now, don’t you?” Squinting eyes contemplated him.
“Yeah, but it’s all good. Can you get us our stuff while I call a cab?”
The blonde turned on his heels with a quick. “Sure.”
Jensen tried to establish eyes contact again. “Jay, is it okay for you if I call us a cab back to your place?” He waited patiently for even the smallest of nods as an answer.
Feeling a big hand caressing his cheek Jared nodded weakly and let himself be guided toward the door. His head was fuzzy and everything around him felt far away. Suddenly a chilly breeze touched his face and in the next moment he was gently being pushed into the backseat of a car.
“Just a few minutes and you’ll be home.” A low voice whispered near his ear and a warm palm settled on his big bulging stomach making him shiver. Jensen! Suddenly he started to realise what had happened back at Chad’s place and his heart began to race. Jensen knew!
Jared shied away from the gentle touch.
“Hey, calm down, Jay.” The hands were now cupping his cheeks and worried green eyes entered his field of vision.
“Jen…” He had intended to say more but his voice broke after that single syllable.
Strong arms circled his slumped shoulders and his friend pulled him against his side soothingly stroking his face.
“Don’t cry, Jay. It’s okay.”
It was only then that he became aware of the tears slowly trickling down both his cheeks and dripping onto his stupid costume. “I… I’m…” Oh god, how pathetic was he that he was sobbing in front of his friend and the cab driver?
“Shhh… Calm down, Jay.”
The pregnant man leaned his head against the offered shoulder and closed his eyes trying to follow the soft spoken request.
*
About half an hour later they were settled in Jared’s bedroom.
After arriving at the younger man’s apartment Jensen had helped him to get comfortable on his bed and gotten him a glass of water. Feeling his friend’s unease at the suggestion of helping him into more comfortable clothes Jensen had decided to change back into his normal outfit in the bathroom while Jared put on some sweatpants and an extra-large t-shirt by himself.
Jared had been unnaturally quiet since the few words exchanged in the cab. Carefully sitting down on the king-sized bed next to his silent friend Jensen placed a hand on his knee to get his attention. “We don’t have to talk about it now, if you don’t want to, Jay.” His voice was a little scratchy but his tone soothing.
“Why are you being so nice?” Jared’s own voice was barely a whisper when he finally started speaking.
The unexpected question caught the older man completely off guard leaving him speechless long enough for his friend to continue talking.
“I… I’ve kept this HUGE secret from you… for so long and… and you’re not mad at me?”
Sad, big blue eyes met his green ones. “I’m not mad at you, Jay.” He reached out and cupped his friend’s cheek with one hand. “It’s mine, isn’t it?” An almost defeated nod confirmed his suspicion. Affectionately stroking his thumb over freshly shaven skin he continued to explain himself. “If anything I’m mad at both of us for not getting our heads out of our asses sooner. We should’ve talked about that night instead of trying to pretend it never happened.”
Even if Jensen hadn’t elaborated which night he was talking about Jared knew they were on the same page. It had been shortly after he and Genevieve had broken up. They had decided to have a men’s night out and after a few beers at one of the local bars in Vancouver they had gone back to their shared house. Both had been a little tipsy already but had gotten another six-pack out and started playing Madden on Jared’s PS3. After having lost the match Jensen had started a wrestling match with him which had soon turned into both groping each other. Long story short they had ended up in bed together and the next day mutually decided to go back to work and act as if nothing had happened.
“I only found out I was…” His voice once more broke and he knew it wasn’t worth starting to stutter and risk tearing up again, too. “…the week before we wrapped the finale.”
Now it was Jensen turn to listen in silence and nod from time to time all the while rubbing his friend’s knee through the thin fabric of his well worn and stretched sweatpants.
“I didn’t know… how to tell you.” He felt the burning of unshed tears in the back of his eyes and took in a deep breath to calm himself down. “Didn’t want you to feel… obligated.” Jensen looked about to start arguing but he held up a hand to keep him quiet. He needed to say it now or he might not be able to get it all out later. “I felt… weird and… I didn’t want you to… be disgusted...”
