First tutorial, howow.

Going from
to

I use Paint Shop Pro 8, but don't think it'll be too difficult to translate.

1.

Make a base from a manga image of your choice. Not going to go into too much detail about this step. I'll be using this picture of Edward Elric from the Fullmetal Alchemist manga.

2. Make a New Layer (Layers -> New Raster Layer) and fill it in with this color:

(#9D8365:)

Now go to Layers -> Properties, and for the Blend Mode select Multiply at 100%. Your image should look like this:

3. New layer. Before moving on to the big details (skin, hair), I like coloring the small, obvious ones. Dunno why, but it makes figuring out the colors for the bigger areas easier.

Anyway, first I'm going to color the whites of his eyes. Use...well, white (shouldn't be hard to figure out but: #FFFFFF) to color 'em. Set the color to Soft Light at 100% and you'll get something like this:

4. New Layer. Use the same color in the previous step to color in Ed's teeth. Set this layer to Soft Light at 80%. I feel weird having the eyes and teeth be the same pure white color nevermind that it probably doesn't make a difference, so, er, whether you want to include this step or not is up to you.

5. New Layer. Color in the rest of Ed's eyes that haven't already whitened out with this color:

(#956B07) and set it to Soft Light at 100%.

6. New Layer. Color the white edges of Ed's jacket with the same white color and set it to Soft Light at 70%.

7. New Layer. Now to color that small bit of Ed's automail with this:

(#808080) Set it to Color (Legacy) at 50%.

8. New Layer. Finally, we're at the skin coloring part. I use the same technique used in originality's manga coloring tutorial here.
Use #706458 (a.k.a. this:
) to color Ed's skin. Set this to Soft Light.

Now go to Adjust -> Hue and Saturation -> Hue/Saturation/Lightness. How to set this up varies from image to image. For this image, I set it as so:
Hue: -2
Saturation: 17
Lightness: 41

Which gives you this:

9. New Layer. On to the hair. To color it in, use this:

(#B49504)

Go to Hue/Saturation/Lightness again and set it up as shown below:
Hue: -2
Saturation: 17
Lightness: 24

Finished? Not quite.

10. Last, but not least, I'm going to use this nifty texture made by meleada:

Set this to Burn at 30%.

Congratulations, you made it through the tutorial!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. :)
