Book Review: East of Eden, John Steinbeck

I just finished reading East of Eden, by Steinbeck, and I have to say that it was one of the most moving pieces of literature I've ever read. I never really liked Steinbeck, before; in my high school experience I'd read The Pearl and Of Mice and Men, and although I found the latter to be mildly interesting, I absolutely loathed the former. It's always such a pleasant surprise to find yourself seriously engrossed in something you had preconceived ideas about. *g*

I was in B&N yesterday looking for a little romantic suspense to engage myself with. Unfortunately I'd read everything by my favorite writers already. What's worse, I encountered so much 'erotic' fiction I felt like blushing. Online, it's a given, I look for that element, whether implicit or suggested, but on the shelves? Talk about slapping something together and calling it writing.

The last honest to god good book I read was Anne Stuart. *is bereft*

Oh, I know! I started out so uninterested, but as the story moved along, it just kept getting better. Although I did have a feeling I would like Steinbeck after the preface.

I don't really like very romantic books. I just prefer friendship/family dynamics to relationship ones. And as much porny porn as I read on lj, I also blush profusely when I encounter it at a bookstore. And I agree with you whole-heartedly: some of the "erotic" literature selling out there is just... mind-blowing.

And not in the way that good sex is mind-blowing, either.

Who are your fav authors? Give me some recs, you well-versed reader!
