Do NOT CHECK ANYTHING! At least, not anything you might possibly want to see again... if it's just a weekend (or even 5 days packing light), you can certainly make do with a carry-on. Hell, I'll even lend you mine. Just DON'T CHECK ANYTHING unless you absolutely have to

Generally, I check my bags these days because it's just easier that way and with the new carry on rules (one bag and one "personal bag") it makes my life a bit easier. **knock on wood** I have NEVER had a problem with checking my bags.
If you don't feel like checking your bags you have 2 choices:
1) Fill your 1 Quart ziplock bag with travel size bottles of stuff. The bottles can be no more than 3 oz. This goes for contact solution, hair gel/spray, lotion, shampoo/conditioner, etc.
2) Don't bring any personal products and just buy them when you get there.
Also, I know Newark Airport picks up things like lighters, etc., so you are better off not bringing them. And, like I said earlier, if you carry on, one duffle bag or "carry on" suitcase and a personal item... a back pack counts as a personal item. Trust me, I have tested these waters numerous times.
