Talk to Tom the Record ExecmparkerceoDecember 9 2006, 22:17:55 UTC
Tom Farrel, rep for True Vinyl Records, was hanging out at the bar, waiting on the main event of the night.
Teal Dear's sound was good on the CD their manager had sent him; and he'd at least heard of the bandleader. Time to see if they'd like a shot at stardom.

"Your parents have a lot of talent. They didn't offer to get you hooked up to a major label, like Goliath?" Tom hastily added, "Not that I'm suggesting you do. I'm just trying to feel out the turf here."

"My parents say the record industry is a scary, scary place, an' they want me to go to film school. Learn a trade, y'know. But anythin' I do, I'm gonna hafta do on my own. They don't pull my weight for me."
Re: Talk to Tom the Record ExecmparkerceoDecember 10 2006, 01:23:29 UTC
Tom grinned at the idea of film as a 'trade', but nodded. "Yeah, I get that. It's uncertain, you know? True Vinyl's doing fine now, but you can never tell how things are gonna go." He smiled. "The attitude helps, though. Too many artists think this is about *who* you know."

"Sure. But that doesn't make it common. That and the idea that if they're special enough, they don't have to work hard, too." He quirked a smile at her. "Okay. We're signing people in the new year. If you guys are interested, I think we can offer you a slot."

Jack leaned on the bar next to Tom and ordered a beer. "Hey," he greeted with a smile, attention clearly divided between Tom and the stage where Teal Deer were just finishing their first set. "They're good aren't they?"
Re: Talk to Tom the Record ExecmparkerceoDecember 10 2006, 00:24:30 UTC
"Hey," Tom said agreeably. "Yeah, they are." He studied the stage for a second, nodding along with the lyrics, then slid Jack a wary glance. "Did I see you talking to some of them? You a fan?"

"Part fan, part crew, all adoring," he said, grinning and shaking his head. "Which sounds weird, I know, but I promise, I'm not crazy."
The bartender set a beer in front of Jack, looking as if he might ask for ID, but Jack just looked back mildly while he slid a bill across the bar, and he shrugged and moved on.
"They're a great band, amazing sound, and really tight. What about you?" Jack looked him over curiously. "You a fan?"

"Scout. True Vinyl Records." Tom wasn't sure if this guy was checking him out, or if he already knew who Tom was, or what. Still, couldn't hurt to talk to him. "Their manager's pretty persuasive, and I was in the area. We sign up-and-coming bands. Wayne, the Barbarian Brothers, Gladwell." He crossed his arms. "So, any good dirt on these guys?"

"Good to meet you. Jack Harkness, roadie extraordinaire. That means you're here to check them out? You thinking about signing them?" He took a drink of his beer and considered the question. "What do you mean by dirt?"
