The major reason I play softball is to manage my social anxiety. I generally play with people who play on two or three teams a week, and our Sunday team is their casual game. I obsess over performance and treat it like the World Series. After the game I typically feel a lot better and find my pregame attitude silly. I don't need the extra workout but I do need to force myself into that uncomfortable social situation on a routine basis because after many years, I can say it's gotten better. I measure that improvement in tenths of percentage points year after year, but it is undeniably better.

Keep making it rain!

Have you tried meetup.com? I found a writing group I kept up with for a couple years there, as well as some puppetry gigs. Ann Arbor also has a couple 'Adventure Clubs' which have no particular focus aside from getting together and trying new things, that can usually clear out the need for special skills or settings.
