Evolving for comedy?

I've seen a number of studies and surveys that show women having a preference for a man who makes them laugh. I've also read about a study or two that showed that women tend to have a more advanced sense of humor than men. Advanced being more word based and less physical based. This leads me to think that we are selecting for humor ( Read more... )

That doesn't mean there aren't women going for him! There also might be people whose humor is more advanced than most people can handle right now.

I don't believe you have a contradiction, but you might be approaching an edge case or something going against the trend.

Well, that would explain all the "American Pie" movies, and every David Spade & Chris Farley movie.... and the current state of American Comedies in general.

But does it add up when you factor-in Monty Python? Or is British humor more "cerebral" than 'Merican slapstick?

I think the physical humor aspect of British humor is more in the frustration and agitation characters get, but it does tend to be more word heavy.

For American wordy comedy you generally have to go with independent films or with dark comedies. Non-dark wordy comedy films they don't know what to do with at the big studios.
