2011 Beijing International Sudoku Tournament

While there have been a few Open Sudoku tournaments in Asia with large first prizes that I haven't ever thought of attending, the upcoming Beijing International Sudoku Tournament promises to be one I'm seriously thinking about with "cost-covering" prizes for a lot of the top 10 spots ($10,000 US for 1st, then $6,000, $5,000, $4,000, $3,000, $2,000 ( Read more... )

I'm a sudoku specialist as far as winning a nikoli time-trial goes, and both of those t-shirts came with a genuine 1get over a field including you ;-) I take my hat off to your nurikabe time today though - well played!

I'm very interested in the format of this competition, and how likely the possibility of a "cost-neutral trip" would actually be. The chance to go to China would be incredible, and the website indicates this will be as well organised as any WPF event...

Yes, being able to sleep in for the rest of the year... that's one benefit of bagging one early. The other being that with the "once per year" change, winning early in the year is now what winning multiple times used to be.

Good work on that one. I don't think I would have beaten you anyway, but I can usually put up a close-to-top time on a really hard Nurikabe, and unfortunately a host of mistakes (none fatal, but several minutes of slowdown) held me from doing that this time.

Yes, it is much cooler to win earlier in the year for exactly those reasons. I'm still hardly at my best waking up at 4:50 AM to a cold apartment, but I think I managed quite well amidst the shivers. I'll take a look at it again later to see how much faster I should have been, but 15 minutes is a pretty solid time for that puzzle.

I'm slowly accepting that I'm never going to win a T-shirt, largely because there's no way I'm waking up at 5 AM after pub quiz the previous evening. Losing the random draw on Flush (which kills me; they couldn't give out two T-shirts?) was an additional sign.
