Battleships were my favorite puzzle when I was young and I certainly remember turning straight to the page with them in each issue of GAMES. I bet you could find a dozen issues in my childhood room where that was basically the only page I had touched ( Read more... )

First one was fairly remedial and probably intended to be. I caught on to the basic idea that breaks into the second one pretty quickly, but it still took me damn near forever to get something down. It was somewhat smooth sailing (har har) after that though. Nicely constructed.

Didn't you do this variation on the decathlon too? And I agree that digital battleships (along with digital snake, digital minesweeper, whatever) is lame. I've never encountered one that wasn't straightforward gruntwork and arithmetic.

Yes, this was also my 20/10 Decathlon variant. The fleet identity allows a lot of theme customization and the "hard" puzzle here certainly solves a lot different than the one on that test.

the larger one was fun.the two 5s are a good help to get it done.But i wasted some time trying the other two possiblities of resolving the 15s and 5s.
