My Week in Films: 11th June - 17th June, 2007

Jun 18, 2007 22:17

What a week. Emotional revelations, paranoia and premonitions of violence, Beavis & Butt-Head, discovering a love for reading the public notices in the newspapers, and I heard Fall Out Boy for the first time. Their early stuff (hah) sounds like New Found Glory. Reminds me of the smell of grass and sweat at Warped tour etc. I just couldn't stop ( Read more... )

oh, i know! but i figure if they were gonna screw me out of the ~proper~ double feature theatrical experience, then i was gonna screw them back. my own little "damn the man", hahha. that said, i'll still see them both in the theatre when we finally get them - september, apparently :/

AND congratulations on finishing everything dude!! i'm proud, what are you going to do with all your free time now?

well, today i am going to a friends place to watch rome and doctor who. so apparently, my break will be spent much like my time at uni - watching ridiculous amonts of stuff.

I am also in the planning stages of a sok puppet army, so world domination may be a possible trajectory.

it has been cool having someone on lj stuck studying the same stuff, plenty of my firneds are at ui still, but we share a unique pain.

good luck for the thesis soon (but not too soon... holidays first!)

ps. i was watching better off dead the other day - you would have to be writting on that yes?

yeah, i can't wait to see grindhouse. i think it's performance on dvd will probably determine their fate, but i always thought that both of them were untouchable... maybe not. anyway, it'll kill on dvd.

i think ghost dog is probably my favorite jarmusch film.

Also, did you know when you gave me the Feminine Mystique that there is a whole chapter shitting all over your boyfriend Freud?

haha i saw that. i lolled.

also, did you know that there has been a tonne of most excellent feminist re-evaluations of Freud, and I am more than sure that that example is just more of the same old bullshit willful misreading of SF. No, I didn't know but I probably could have guessed, but so much work has been done since then that it probably cancels it out haha. Whatever.

What does she say?

Well there's some of his letters to Martha which I'm not sure I'm wilfully misreading. Then she goes on to say that concepts like penis envy and castration complex only work if we assume male superiority. Yeah, basically that he wrote his theories with the underlying assumption that women were inferior to men and then these ideas were uncritically presented to American women as scientific. She does admit that some of it had to do with his theories being misappropriated but she still has a strong case for why he was a wanker.

I'm not sure I could be convinced of feminist re-evaluations of Freud. How sad, our theories hate each other.

not really, it's all in the presentation. in his work he quite openly says that he is working within the binaries that the society of the early 1900s presented him: male/female active/passive masculinity/femininity etc. i don't like that his personal letters are being used as proof to denounce his theories, it's the same thing with the whole cocaine "issue." whatever. here's what someone with more knowledge wrote:

“They impinge upon the largest question that his work raises: Is psychoanalysis a science, an art, or an imposture? They impinge upon it because, unlike other great figures in the history of Western culture, Freud seems to stand under the obligation to be perfect. No one acquainted with the psychopathology of Luther or Gandhi, Newton or Darwin, Beethoven or Schumann, Keats or Kafka, would venture to suggest that their neuroses damaged their creations or compromised their stature. In sharp contrast, Freud’s failings, real or imagined, have been proffered as conclusive evidence for the bankruptcy of his creation, as though ( ... )

Hey baby girl
I was glad to read your review of Grindhouse, anxious to see it and of course, I be trustin' yer siq insights and all. I was really really scared it was going to suck and then the world as I pecieve it would therefore cease to exist.
How have you been going? Swimmingly? Dancing away the night at NEXT me thinks. I've just been chillin', right around my way. I keep watching One Hour Photo for some reason, I think because the cinematography is really fucking Kubrickesque TO THE MAXLOAD and you watch Robin Williams take a shit and there is all this crazy "indie" conceptual photography in it that is like a bad regurg. of lj/myspazz/flickr combined.
I wanted to ask you about amazon: I'm looking to purchase the original Father of the Bride (Spence, my main man) and I don't know how to go about it/use Amazon full stop. Any hints/suggestions? I mean you are the bomb and all.
Thanks for the Sympathy for the Devil screenshots *hoards/feels excited*

ALL MY LOVE, SAILING YER WAY.

hiii stranger!

things have been awesome the last few days, no work, sitting on my ass watching movies (mainly stuff from imdb top 250, have i told you of my quest to watch them all? it's a nerdy endeavour but goddamn do i get to watch some really fucking awesome films.) it's all good!

as for amazon - it's pretty simple to use, really. the only bastard thing is waiting for the delivery to arrive. i go for the expedited internation shipping which is a bit more expensive but is so quick, usually like here under 10 days. any specific questions let me know & i'll help you out.

hee love the new icon! see you round the old ~bb~ - i say we have a hang out session soon, but we'll have to wait until our roster gets released - at the last minute of course - to sort something out. :D
