last game-related spampost I promise

This had better be a facetious post title or I will be SO FULL OF WOE.

Seriously though, eleventy thumbs up for this shit, because I am a language dork and sometimes reading manga... hurts me.

You mean I really get to KEEP RAMBLING? I want to keep rambling. But half the people on my flist are tired of FFXII junk, and I felt uncool, BUT I AM GOING TO ANYWAY.

Certain manga are well-done, as I said Sato does a decent job, as do a lot of translators who work with smaller publishers.

You are talking to someone who went on to make AT LEAST eight separate Kingdom Hearts II posts a good few months after the game had come out. I don't know from uncool! I will read EVERY POST whilst I stroke the metal cover of the Collecter's Edition I went and bought out of weakness.

Smaller publishers, that makes sense! I was totally speaking out of specific bitterness for the Peace Maker Kurogane manga which has the dual virtue of being compelling and laughable at...the same time.

I am itching to do character examinations. ASHE! She's got a role that is typically played by MALE LEADS in most stories! FRAN! You didn't expact her to become as developed as she does, what with only a few spoken lines! And NO ONE IS BROODY OR ANGSTY, at least not in the regular way, the closest we get is Balthier's glib cynicism but that's allowed given THE SITUATION.

The PMK manga translation has one fatal flaw which is, GTFO TOKYOPOP H0RS YOU TRANSLATED THE SECOND SERIES FIRST HOW DOES THAT MAKE SENSE. Also they dropped translation as soon as Kurono-sensei stopped drawing the manga. I was very upset on both fronts, but ESOECIALLY THE SECOND, on account of Kurono being mean and wimpy.

Translation is a bugbear of mine. I don't speak all the languages I'd like to, and probably never will, but that doesn't mean I will accept second-rate translations. There is a huge gap between being able to translate from one language to another (which is admirable in itself), and being able to -write-. Being a writer, I'm a tad sensitive to sloppy writing, and even more sensitive to the fact that writing is a craft that is often dismissed as 'anyone can do it'. Anyone can string to words together, not every can craft.

I just started read NANA in english, and some of the sentences are like trying to swallow rusty scrap metal. It's a shame, because otherwise I'm in love with the series.

/end wank

NANA is full of these great exchanges that, yes, lose luster when fed through the Tokyopop grinder. THEN AGAIN, I found the scanlations to be pretty boss, and I'll stick to reading those because they do not make me cringe. Also: FREE.

I'm old-fashioned. I prefer being able to hold a book in my hands.

Have you read the Vampire Hunter D books at all? They're so bad they're gold. Pure, brilliant, shiny gold.

DON'T STOP TALKING!!! ...she says, with love. I'm playing FFXII and as soon as I catch up I intend to read every post you've made on the subject and then FREAK OUT ALL OVER THE PLACE.

So.

I guess this is also a warning that I will be all over this stuff in a day or so!
