Cool story, that's for posting it! :) Sounds like a basically sound car that $2K of work and parts will give you a great fun ride.

How gnarly is the timing belt change? Some of the Audi's you need to unbolt half the engine just to get into the the darn thing...

Timing belts on these are easy. You do have to pull the front of the car apart, but it's not hard to do. Just a few easy-to-access bolts and it comes off in big pieces. Bumper and radiator supports come right off, then you have unhindered access to the front of the engine. Timing belt is a breeze, just pull up a stool and it's all presented right in front of you.

Awesome! I had the engine from one of these in my 1988 Audi 80 Quattro, then later swapped it in to a 1990 Coupe Quattro. I got my engine, ECU, and loom from a wreck. Amazing engine in such a light car. I never drove the 200 itself, but I did have a 5000cs Turbo Quattro (10v version of the engine) that I loved. My ex ended up with it and threw in a wastegate spring and an ECU chip, made it quite the beast.

I love these cars, and a 4000cs Quattro with the 20v 5cyl turbo is my dream conversion.
