My Kitchen Aid stand mixer has been making some strange noises, and so I went to take it apart (you know, the old take it apart, clean it, regrease it and put it back together song & dance) and got stuck at the split-the-case-halves step, when I could not figure out how to get the locating pins to let go (STORY OF MY LIFE).

Was it making the "Woob woob woob woob woob" noise where it sounds like it's unbalanced or something?

Fun. The grease was coming out of mine because I didn't use it enough. That'll learn me to not go too long between baking binges.

Huh. The grease was coming out of mine 'cause I was using it too much -- the grease heated up and dripped down the shaft. I have high-temp marine grease just waiting to get jammed in there.

(In other news, Baby Kawi has new fork oil, new engine oil, new brake fluid, new tires, re-shimmed valves, cleaned and adjusted carburettors, and is currently waiting on new steering head bearings. :-D )

There is one sacrificial plastic gear in there if I remember right. Perhaps it has been sacrificed?

You can get them from the manufacturer, I think, for not too much money.

I did a bit of research on this a few years ago when we got ours. I might be remembering it wrong and it might depend on which model you have. Mine is a Professional 600 series (in gloss white as I hate those new-fangled colors and flames BS).

YMMV

As an FYI should you be in the market for a new one or accessories for a kitchen aid I get quite a substantial discount on kitchen aid products.
