Thanks! I was pretty sure that he wasn't going to actually arrest me or anything -- he didn't have that air of action about him. But I was equally sure that I could drastically shorten the interaction by volunteering a bunch of information that was, strictly speaking, not really his business.

It's okay to use the excuse if you intend to stay out of jail on your birthday. Although, it may have made for a better story later in life regarding the time you spent your birthday in jail defending civil liberties. Most people don't get nice opportunities like that. Just something to chew on.

To be clear: motive-nuance was breaking the law by running a red light (yes, even on a bike, it's breaking the law), not "defending civil liberties".

If the law is wrong, then one should fight to change it, not just break it and then expect no punishment for same.
