There are semi-functional WYSIWYG TeX screen editors but my very limited experience hasn't been good.

On the other hand, I did my master's thesis in Word and wouldn't wish that fate on a dog.

Hang on, are you using the equation editor or are you trying to do this with the standard typesetting commands?

Equation editor. It's really flakey when it comes to lim formatting. I think if you go to the box on the right and hit the space bar, the lim goes under like it normally would, but that's dumb and I'm not totally certain it will always work.

Somewhere in there, there should be a way to explicitly tell it where sub/super/equation boxes go relative to one another. It looks like a grid of rectangles. Or did in 1994, anyway.

I hate autocorrect, and I hate all the autoformatting that MS Word does. Yes, it has lots of helpful bells and whistles, but sometimes it is just impossible to make the page look the way you want it to.

Wouldn't I need $1500 or something stupid?

And... I'm mad on principle because I should just be able to do it in Word. Stabby!!!

'Home' version is about $150-200. I use OOo for serious writing anyway. Microsoft Word is a needless expense IMUO.

I can't believe I'm about to say "you should have just started in TeX". So I'll just save us both the effort, and go get a beer instead.

It's MS's way of trying to discourage people from math and the sciences.
