It had a definite plot, well-rounded characters, and all of the tropes of a normal fiction piece. Perhaps you should throw on the makeup and fishnets and give it another look.

Looks more like Shub-Niggurath than Cthulhu, but then, I've seldom had the need to classify between Great Old Ones much. They pretty much all just try to eat you.
