Rev. Lowery is an old lion of the civil rights movement, and has been a (very) steady voice for reason in politics local and global. He knows civil rights issues when he sees (or smells) them, and doesn't hesitate to speak, even when his intimate community disagrees, as many do about the gay rights issue.

He hasn't always been well received, but I've always respected his POV, especially in the miasma of Atlanta/Southern politics, where a lot of people elevated to speak for gobs of people let that assignment go straight to their heads, and you can't take them seriously thereafter. I haven't always agreed with his take on situations, either, and believe he may occasionally be mislead, but really, who can't? He's a man of basic integrity, as far as i've ever seen.
