He doesn't like chew toys, though. I think he was just trying to get out where the people were. :-/

I've crate trained two dogs. It works; although they were puppies.
However, the point is that they feel secure, not trapped. At least that's what the experts who came up with crate training say. It was hard for me (I am claustrophobic and assume everything else is also), but my dogs didn't seem to mind at all.
Also do some digging into getting rid of destructive behaviors due to abandonment issues for dogs. there are things you can do.

WRT abandonment: you worsen the problem if you pay a lot of attention to the dog right before you leave or right after you come back. Play and give as much attention as you want in general -- probably the more the better -- but don't make a big deal out of leaving. And when you get back, do some other stuff -- put your coat up, or go ahead and get the groceries and put them up, or go to the bathroom, or whatever -- before you start paying attention to the dog.

Also, while I don't think punishment is a particularly bad thing, it hasn't to me seemed really helpful. The one dog where I'm having problems did seem to be less problematic a little when I got really pissed at her (and swatted her rear), but the not making a big deal out of comings and goings has probably helped more. Besides, just having the dog scared of you all the time probably isn't what you want.

He'll cry about it for a bit, but it will help with the separation anxiety.

Also, man. That is a CUTE dog.
