The door to the bar opens, and Merriman enters. A cursory glance at his clothing would indicate that he's entering from some point in the mid-twentieth century, but there's nothing else with him -- no newspaper or the like -- that would indicate the date.
A few steps into the bar, he catches sight of the small group at a table near the door...and he pauses in his tracks, hesitating.
