Your guy has some serious gift-giving-fu. If your last question is not, in fact, rhetorical, I can share some of my gift-giving experience. I've never received anything so tremendous as a piano, but I did get a computer. And a one-eyed kitty. So... :)

When looking for something for him, don't try to compare prices of what he may have gotten you previously. Just seek out something he has great interest in.
You love dogs and enjoy playing the piano. Other primary interests have been writing, cooking and fencing. Generally things in those categories are probably going to go over well with you.
I'm sure you can think of categories of things he has strong interests in. Pick one, focus some time on it (more than one day) and you'll find something just perfect.
