"Let 'er go." Vreni's Balkan accent is thick and her voice is deep as it booms over the heads of several bystanders watching the shopkeeper violently grab the girl. She looks like a street rat, a boheme, a gypsy, and emotion swells up in Vreni's bosom at the sight of a poor girl alone on the streets, looking for food and shelter. The shopkeeper--whomever he thinks he is--will suffer.

She pushes her way past the shoppers and steps to the man, spitting in his face.

"Oh--" the girl starts as the man backs off like a scared, skittish cat, hands raised defensively. He don't want trouble, he says, ducks away from the crowd to set his stand into proper order while the girl scrambles for her several prizes. She doesn't even seem aware of her savior until she stands straight, up on her toes, and frowns.

"Why'd you do that?"

The man backs away like a coward and Vreni laughs loudly. She's grinning toothily as her eyes go over the crowd and watches the scared faces of the middle-class. They avert her gaze and she's feeling smug. Her adrenaline is rushing from the thrill, but she's still aching to throw some fists and fire her guns.

Another time.

The girl pipes up behind her and Vreni turns sharply, her sensitive ears picking up every letter in her speech.

"He vas hurtin' you, little one. I came to help and I did."

The laugh startles the girl, but she doesn't shrink back, grows bolder with the wrinkle of curiosity in her brow and the bright shine of her eyes. This woman's not from around her, then, is she--makes Sid wonder just where. She's got a good idea, but her personal world's so tiny; she's got nothing to judge by.

"'Cause..I dunno, nobody's ever done somethin' like that for me before. Everybody's afraid they'll get taken off."

Vague, but young girls have that tendency. Sid bounces on her heels, chews through a mouthful of fruit. A loud swallow. "You're real strange, lady."
