Thank you for helping these women. Such horrible things have been done to them.

I had the pleasure of working with Eve Ensler years ago in Chicago when I was part of the mayor's taskforse against domestic violence. We did a V-Day workshop at a local university. Part of that workshop involved all the women (and a few men) standing up and speaking about why there were there. Every one of those 40 or more people spoke about the fear that ruled their lives. Fear of walking outside; fear of family, strangers, men; fear of bosses, teachers, parents; fear seemed to rule their lives. Yet here they were to fight that fear.

I spoke last. I didn't speak of fear. I spoke of the feeling that women aren't supposed to have. I spoke of anger. I was angry that these people were afraid. I'm angry that the women you and Eve and others are helping need the help. I'm angry at a world that uses rape or the fear of rape to control more than half the population.

I'm not afraid.

Thank you.

I just finished The Poisonwood Bible today, so this hits home even more than it otherwise would. Thank you for sharing the experience with us.
