Loved the dialogue, the characterizations, the overall emotional tone (a bit like getting stabbed repeatedly in the chest while being wrapped in something wonderfully warm and fuzzy). A painfully good read.
Reading this great story was the best hour++ of my day. You are lovely not just at the emotional through-line but also at the details - all the bits of canon and innovation and insight that make this live. I have to agree that baking!Meryl and baked!Tanith are highlights, as is the presence of Lola on Evan Bates's iPod. But the most important thing is that the Ryan & Johnny relationship - the dialogue, the familiarity between them, the video games, the sex - really works

It honestly perplexes me when readers think my narrative voices are authorial. Do I need a blanket disclaimer saying that my characters' opinions are not my own? And in particular that, early in a long fic, it's not uncommon for any writer to set up flaws in a character that the character might later rethink?
The line from the wedding fic, which you attribute to Charlie, is actually also Ryan - and Ryan is grossly misreading what happened between Charlie and Johnny. Both stories, and most of my fics, are giant hit parades of unreliable narration. I don't really believe in reliable narrators.
It's my experience that a lot of straight-identified/self-closeting men who have sex with men rationalize the way Ryan does early in this fic (and the way both Ryan and Charlie do in the other fic). And also that many queer people do have fantasies about converting or winning straight people. I mean, have you seen the way Johnny flirts with his straight male friends? Does it really look like self-loathing to you, either in real life or in this

Sorry for the continued anon comments, but skating fandom is rather toxic just now.
Understood and agreed. :) Still, I admit the anonitude is making me testy, and in general I don't like having serious-business conversations in the comments of fic. (Or, really, in public posts at all.) If you want to continue, you're welcome to email me; mosca @ LJ should work.
If you don't want to continue that way, I want to let you know that I'm sorry the lines troubled you and interfered with your ability to enjoy the story. I don't feel like I fully understand what your objection is, since we're crossing our signals quite a bit, but I'll keep an eye on it in the future.
The Detroit part was far more awesome than I was anticipating, and I was anticipating a LOT. Yay for supporting cast and hot sex and Ryan just going for it.
And the end! With the 'Johnny's boyfriend' caption. *squees*
Aw! So TRUE! And - what a thing to quote - becauase as much as I love the last line, there were so many good lines in here, I feel like I should have quoted all of them, not just the last one!
It's a fic full of incredible dialogue actually. All the interchanges - and even the sex is a dialogue - are so witty and complex. They're such a pleasure to read.
And I am reading in bed when I should be sleeping so this isn't exactly coherent. Lovely story. Love your complicated ice skater relationships. *g*
