That's it.

I am officially done with the first-person POV in fiction. Automatic no-buy from now on.

This post brought to you courtesy of my great disappointment with Kate Elliott's* love-it-or-hate-it Cold Magic*I miss the excellent science fiction novels she wrote back in the 90s, which felt like they were written for adults. Very sad! I'd pay ( Read more... )

I've never been fond of first-person POV, but this acute episode of loathing dates back to being stuck in Katniss Everdeen's POV for three books. I might not have detested her so much by the end if I had not been imprisoned within her head for the whole trilogy.

I can't stop rewriting in my head in third-person POV and liking that a lot better, which kills off any desire to keep reading the actual book.

Will it ever pass? I don't know.

Present tense I mostly run across in fanfic, and that generally gets rewritten in my head, too. I don't understand fandom's great love for it.

I've gotten used to first-person (though I don't love it), but present tense makes me insane.

Only last week I opened up a novel I'd obtained via Paperbackswap because it sounded interesting, read the first page, discovered that it had been written in third-person present, and immediately posted it back at PBS without reading it.

My TBR pile is far too huge for me to waste time on a book that grates on my nerves from the very first page.
