Were you watching the first series or Brotherhood? The first series is pretty good, but the Brotherhood series is IMO much better and has better female characters (though it's rushed in the beginning because the two series cover the same material early on before diverging, and apparently the staff didn't want to spend much time on events that the first series' viewers were already familiar with).
