Anthrocon 2016

So that was it! My 20th Anthrocon! It's quite a significant milestone since there aren't too many things that I've been doing every year for 20 years. Geocaching and Where's George both started after the first Anthrocon. Of course, over two decades a lot has changed. The con has grown up significantly and in a sense, so have I. The con moved to ( Read more... )

It's almost been around as long as I have! XD

Breezewood.... I've been there a couple years ago returning from D.C. Along 70 near the Maryland border, there's a rather scary cliff. If you're driving north, don't look to your right! XD

I can't tell you about Pittsburgh having never been there but given that a number of major cities are like what you said, you're probably right. I've also heard of people being attacked after giving them food or money. I guess no good deed goes unpunished.

On the other hand, I heard of a couple of proposed laws (including my area) making it illegal to help homeless people.

Nonetheless, sounds you had fun AND still went geocaching along the way. :)

20 years, wow, that makes you older than dirt in dog years you know :P I think I attended 7 or 8 FCs and have pretty much fallen out of the scene entirely.

Good to hear Gatorman is still kickin' around too - he's not posted here in LJ in forever :P

Sad on Pittsburg rotting from the inside, sadly that's an all too common problem nationwide...

Heyo, Mako! Glad to hear you're still thinking of me. Sorry I'm dead on LJ. I'm still kicking, as you said-only I use Twitter as my main social site; I am @joeygatorman if you have a presence there.

If I may add to the discussion, I'm a bit concerned about the rising costs of living in Pittsburgh. Gentrification is starting to creep into some neighborhoods like Lawrenceville (a taxi driver told us about huge changes coming to the area), and some prices are going up, such as train fares, although it's still much better than what we have in D.C.-a tiered system with a $4.50 max based on how far you travel, and travel between Downtown and the North Side is free.

Downtown Pittsburgh has always been a bit gritty and a bit dirty but I'm sorry to hear that it's getting more dangerous as well.

I'm glad to read your report (and of this milestone!)... tho sorry the location has deteriorated some as you saw.... I hope the con highlights outweighed the not-so-good stuff :>
