Is there a reason automatic shifts have that odd step pattern now?

I haven't come across a good explanation for that. It would be an interesting question to ask the auto dealer or service department the next time I go there. I would guess that it is because new cars have weird gears like "B" and "S" and they want to make it not too easy for people to shift into the wrong gear by mistake.
