We didn't get the place...the landlord changed his mind and is going for a summer rental instead. The estate agent is headed to another place in an hour and will call me about it and take pictures. So the week in NJ was a waste, and we could have spent more time getting ready for the move.

The movers are here now packing. Lisa isn't doing too well ( Read more... )

Sigh. I'm so sorry. If there's anything I can do...

Is the place the real estate agent going to the backup place you mentioned in a previous post?

Also, knock it off - the trip wasn't a waste. There's significant value in knowing where you're going to be living, area-wise, even if you don't have the house selected. You now know that it's a pretty area with things to do, and that there's a lot you like - both of you. Moving like this is hard. Moving blind is much, much worse.

The trip was inconveniently timed, and didn't have the desired outcome. All that means is that the time and energy in this one house was a bust, not that the entire thing was.

C & I understand what the two of you are going through better than you might imagine, due to some nightmarish (and sometimes completely unplanned/unprepared for) moves we've had to undergo in the past. I know what it's like to reach that breaking point, and C knows what it's like to have to be a tower of strength and just...keep...going.

*Sending all my best to you.*

Its probably for the best if the landlord couldn't see steady year round income is better than summer money. Not the brightest bulb. At least now you can visualize the area when the agent gives you a listing to consider. Tonight you will be in a hotel I hope you can get take out and rest up a little.

It's not a "defense", per se, but a lot of homeowners in that area opt for summer rental instead of year-round, in part because they don't want to be landlords. So for four months, they rent out the house at weekly rates, with a management company handling everything. The weekly rates are generally equal to one month's "normal" rental, and depending on how long the house remains available to rent (if it's extended beyond the Memorial to Labour Day traditional runs), the homeowner makes more money for less effort.

It sucks, but that's sort of Life on the Shore. (And yes, people will pay Crazy Vacation Rental Rates. I know someone who's paying nearly $10,000 for two weeks for a just-off-the-beach house on Cape May this year.)
