Ah. Eugh, that can be complicated. Let's see: the United States is currently a two-party democracy with actually about 5 major parties on any given ballot.

The federal government has three branches: the legislative, executive, and judicial. It uses a check and balances system that, when working properly, keeps any particular branch from exerting too much power. We have presidents for terms that are four years; each president can only serve two terms in their lifetime now.
