MTV: "Beautiful Creatures" movie to fill "Potter" void?
"With boy wizard Harry Potter taking his final bow in 2011's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part II," there will undoubtedly be a cauldron-sized hole in the genre, which Warners Brothers hopes to fill with a movie based on the new supernatural book series "Beautiful Creatures."
The novel is the first of a five-part series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. According to Variety, in the first book "high-school student Ethan Wate meets and becomes bewitched by Lena Duchannes, a 16-year-old whose family has moved to the small South Carolina town where he lives. The two must confront a curse that has haunted her family for generations as she comes to grips with her powers."
The script will be penned by Richard LaGravenese who also wrote "P.S. I Love You." He had this to say about the magical tale: "I liked that this book has all the basic elements of a classic first love story with a supernatural layer over it. So the first time they hear the words ‘boyfriend' and ‘girlfriend,' they accidentally overhear each other telepathically. Their first kiss comes after he saves her life, and their first date is part of a bigger adventure that leads to the unraveling of the mysterious curse that haunts her family."
The movie sounds quite different from the "Harry Potter" franchise, in that it's set in the "real world" with fantastical elements added in. What I find most intriguing about this project, however, is that unlike J.K. Rowling's series or even "The Lord of the Rings" or the "Twilight Saga", there is no built-in fan base to hint at success. The first novel is being released today, so it seems Warner Bros. is taking a bit of a leap (sans broomstick) hoping Potter fans will find solace in "Beautiful Creatures.""

I like that they highlight the difference in the franchises, but the simple fact that BC is being compared to HP in potential is quite thrilling.
