this is, um, loosely inspired by my memories of Erwin Castillo's brilliant novel, The Firewalkers, which centers on a tribal dance of -- no, not Fiji >P Cavite, one of our provinces. i

Renji is a firewalker. yes. he really is all mind over matter (and if he fails at this then he loses, to Inui to boot).

I love the analogy, especially the passage on the firewalkers because it seems to be to be very Renji - 'nothing else exists'. the switch of tenses for this passage is a little jarring but it's probably a personal thing.

how can you do all this for long, and remember that you're human?

aah yup, i have to fix the tense-switching. the continuity is severely off, even for something that is supposed to be non-linear. (no really, this story should be subtitled "how to ruin the best idea you've ever had." schwing!)

will definitely revise this baby just for posterity's sake. lots of things i failed to say right. am happy something like this came to me on mizu's birthday, but do need to treat good ideas with proper respect. ay wot.

Catching up on fic reading, so apologies for the late comment. I am in love with the idea of Renji as a firewalker. The music and Yuki's mind harmonizing with Renji's is such a beautiful concept. I like diving into Renji's mind, because I get the feeling he's not an easy one to read, although his insights on others are certainly interesting. So this was a lovely way to see what's underneath all that control and discipline. <3
