I saw the new movie version of Hairspray this evening. I really wanted to like it. I was really charmed by it. It was fat-positive! It was integration! It was dancing and a mature couple rekindling their relationship! And did I mention fat-positive

Totally, totally, totally how I felt about it. I was outraged when I learned John Travolta would be playing Edna Turnblad. I was ready to boycott the entire film (but my girlfriend made me go) on just that point. I'm glad I didn't, because if you could excise JT with an Exacto knife, Hairspray would rank among one of the best movie musicals in recent years. But I did feel rage and annoyance every time Travolta was onscreen, which is probably not what the producers intended when they hired him.
