Contrary to popular belief, they didn't actually get together years ago. It's not dramatic at all. They don't fall madly in love the first day they meet; Spencer is nervous, spills coffee on his brand new pants and Derek laughs whilst helping him mop it off his desk. They become friends.
They don't fall into each other's arms after some horrific case; there aren't any proclamations of love after he shoots Hankel, and there isn't mad love making in some nameless hotel to remind themselves that they're actually alive after looking at torn-up victims all day long.
Their first kiss is a little boring.
Valentine's day, would you believe, and they're in Spencer's apartment, pizza boxes on the coffee table and sci-fi movie on the TV, exhausted because they only got off the jet a few hours ago, neither wanting to spend time alone in their houses.
Spencer tells a dorky joke, laughs at himself, then flushes. It comes out of nowhere, Derek leaning across the empty seat between them and touching Spencer's throat with his fingers, then kissing him softly.
There's a moment where they stare at each other, wide-eyed, then Spencer shifts, twists closer and kisses Derek, hands holding his jaw and lips firm and sure. They fold together a little, so that they're lying down, Derek half on Spencer's thin frame. When they turn back to the movie, he lets his head hook under Spencer's chin and slips his hand under the fabric of Spencer's shirt to rest on his stomach. That's it. They fall asleep on the sofa.
When they wake up, at about five am, Derek smiles and kisses him sleepily, sealing the deal, deciding for the both of them that they're not going to brush this off or ignore it.
It's comfortable and easy. It isn't something they directly address, and they fall in love, realise they've been working towards it for a while before they realised, but it's not a big dramatic affair. Neither of them advertise it, but they don't hide it, and they don't let it interfere.
Their first time isn't a big deal either, except the way it is. They don't have candles or roses, or a romantic meal. They also don't have issues to deal with, because Derek knows this is Spencer, and Spencer knows he can trust Derek, so it's simple. They've been sharing a bed for about a month already, and Derek watches Spencer read from his position leaning on the door frame, then crawls into bed and over him. They're almost stupidly compatible, and where Derek pushes, Spencer gives. The ways Spencer holds him - fingers against his back, nails tight, body certain, almost demanding, movements solid and taut - leave Derek as willing to please and Spencer is eager to have.
It's the one sexual experience of his life that Derek's felt content with, and when he whispers that he loves him, words playing over Spencer's hot, sweaty skin once they're both spent and tired, he means it more than he ever has.
They bump into Hotch in a restaurant; he walks by their table and spots them, looks at their joined hands and gives them a smile and a nod. They see Garcia in a bar, with Kevin, and she runs over, screeches and kisses them both. They have a few drinks together, and Derek decides that he likes this, being a couple around their friends, so the next morning he takes Spencer's hand as they walk in to the office, and that's it. Spencer blushes beetroot, but doesn't pull away, and he pushes a quick kiss to the corner of Derek's mouth in front of JJ before disappearing into Garcia's bunker.
Derek suggests Spencer moving in with him a year after they first kiss, Valentine's day, the one time they are doing something different, with roses and a restaurant, but he just slips it into the conversation quietly, so that there's no massive fanfare, just a pause on Spencer's part, and a smile that lights up his entire face.
It's not dramatic, the way they get into this. It's normal, calm, decidedly not like the other aspects of their lives that they share, but they probably wouldn't change it. It's comfortable, and they're in love and lucky. They're happy with that.
