I have long realized that "Childfree Abby's All You Can Eat Buffet for Birds" seems to have acquired 4 stars in the Michelin Guide for Birds. We have treats to tempt the most discerning avian palate in various feeders: Mixed Bird Seed, shelled peanuts, peanuts in the shell, tiny bird seed in the finch feeder mixed with nyger seed, cracked corn on ( Read more... )

We (The Beau, The Three Cats, and I) love watching our lesser goldfinches, our house finches, our purple finches, our cardinals, our black-crested titmice, and our various little sparrows at our feeders. We are not as fond of the four dozen (no exaggeration) mourning doves who are big bullies. And now we are ALL excited about the mother deer who comes up out of the scrub to graze. Last week I got all happy about putting out a new finch seed mix... nyger thistle and sunflower chips... but the lesser goldfinches would have none of it and were most put out. So the doves scored a big haul, and we are back to the tried and true for the little ones.

Around here, the mourning doves seem to be more passive aggressive than aggressive: they sit there and the other birds move in and just ignore them. The really aggressive birds here are the grackles and blue jays, the grackles especially. They are the reason we now have 5 feeders instead of just one. They would move in at the big one and just shovel the seed out of the way and the little birds were frightened off. So, we got the finch feeder. Then came the sunflower seed feeder then both types of peanuts and a suet cake for the winter months. Oh.. and the humming bird feeder is out now too, but in a quieter area of the yard, near the lilac bush.
