To Carry this analogy a bit further and continue to use the Hummer as a metaphor for the American Flag and all it stands for, then in the eyes of a goodly portion of the rest of the world, the "American Flag and all it stands for" means:

wasteful
ostentatious
gas-guzzling
inefficient
poorly designed for the job for which it was designed to do
pretentious
impractical
overpriced
