I'm entirely having a HobbitSequel moment at that, but yeah, as you say, he probably just isn't well known enough across the pond. Mind you, I remember back in the mid-80s people being surprised at the idea of Freddie Mercury being gay, and even being a bit in denial about it.

My friend Leigh? Didn't know Stephen Fry was gay until quite recently. Also, Ian McKellen. Though she also didn't know David Tennant and James McAvoy were Scottish. I once said 'you have to stop being surprised by people being gay or Scottish' then I said 'ooh, John Barrowman? Gay AND Scottish' *G* Though it is a bit like old Sam Barnett and the girls on the comm/IMDB *G* (speaking of one of the Team Leaders has slept with the guy who played Crowther in the touring cast and his friend/housemate has slept with Sam *G* Apparently he drinks quite a lot.)

Also, I love how they illustrated the 'who's gay?' post with Ryan Seacrest and Zefron lol

I realise that sometimes I am surprised people don't know things when actually it's perfectly reasonable for most Brits not to know that Neil Patrick Harris is gay (or for that matter who on earth he is LOL) but Stephen Fry? And Alan? And there are a couple in there beign surprised about Ian McKellen!

I wouldn't mind if they weren't so obviously gay and like, huge LGBT campaginers! But then, if you're not particularly interested in queer politics, would you really know? She's not into LotR particularly or QI *shrugs* But if you care and don't know, that's insane!

Well exactly. People on ONTD are the sort of people who do care and do know (seriosuly, if you're going to say "I have such a thing for Stephen Fry" then surely you shouldn't be being surprised the guy is gay! but then I suppose everyone has to find out sometimes... except I don't remember learning Stephen Fry was gay, or Alan Cumming for that matter, it's just true *g*)

LOL 'Tis quite hard to find pictures of the touring casts soemtimes, if you googles anything you have to get through heaps of the originals first (such a hardship!)

Yeah, Stephen Fry, not a particularly high profile in the US. Not much of a profile at all, really.

NPH, on the other hand, has been a cult favorite since he was Doogie Howser and courtesy of How I Met Your Mother, his stock is currently rising again liekwoah.

When NPH actually came out last year (?) I didn't actually register who he was for ages because all anyone would say was "wow, Doogie Howser's gay?" and I hadn't a clue who that meant *g* As soon as someone mentioned HIMYM and Broadway and the rest of it all became clear!

I always forget that Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry have only just made it across to the US and that just because people now know who Hugh is they won't neccessarily know who Stephen is.
