I haven't received my PIN to be able to nominate for the HUGO Awards yet but I have spent a little bit of this weekend thinking about who I might want to nominate and then being amused at myself because in terms of novels/novellas/short stories I've actually read about as many eligible books for the 1941 Retro Hugos as for the 2016 Hugos themselves

I think you're probably right, I mean I felt it at WorldCon too only there my problem was that I fit in rather better with some of the old school stuff than a lot of our friends *shrugs* I just don't think I share that many fandoms with the Nine Worlds attendees, the Book track is amazing but full of authors I've never read and the fandom track has tended to be full of conversations I've had many times before.
BUT having said all that it's still nice to be surrounded by fans and I don't go to any other cons at the moment.
(just, if I do go this year no gin... or less free wine :-P)

Nine Worlds suits me - I could happily live in the books track, which is usually full of authors I *have* read (or ones I'd be willing to read) - but I can quite easily see that that's not the same for everyone. It works out at quite a lot a money to just be hanging out with friends!
(but this is half the fun of the con! Maybe just not on the same night? (or maybe just not when you *coughIcough* want to talk to an author you *coughIcough* have a massive crush on *g*))

If you do end up nominating stuff for 1941, please post something about what it is you've nominated? I've probably read stuff (back in the day, when I was working my way through my brother's SF collection as a teenager, if not since) so would be interested to know what's eligible and doesn't suck donkeyballs.
As for the fan artist stuff, try here for starters and see if anyone works for you: http://hugonoms2015.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Best_Fan_Artist
That wiki is helping me organise my thoughts on nomination, if nothing else, though it's still the big pit of way too much stuff to be readable by any one person who has to do things like work for a living.
