I haven't received my PIN to be able to nominate for the HUGO Awards yet but I have spent a little bit of this weekend thinking about who I might want to nominate and then being amused at myself because in terms of novels/novellas/short stories I've actually read about as many eligible books for the 1941 Retro Hugos as for the 2016 Hugos themselves ( Read more... )

fandom, books, worldcon, hugo awards

I had no idea you were considering not going to Nine Worlds this year, but I kind of get where you're coming from. And the 'this isn't my place' things about cons in general. I think in some ways we fall in between two BIG generations - we're not quite old school fans, but we're not new up and comers either - and that makes it difficult to fit in. Also, personally, coming at fandom primarily from the fanfic side, there's always the niggling idea that I'm being judged for that, even though it's now much more mainstream. The new generation don't have that same history so they're able to be much more open about what they like - which is also I think how Connotations made us all feel. Idk if any of that makes sense! I'm probably just rambling now. :)

Sorry! I thought I'd said back after last year's but I guess I haven't been saying anything either way recently. Mostly because I still don't know!

I think you're probably right, I mean I felt it at WorldCon too only there my problem was that I fit in rather better with some of the old school stuff than a lot of our friends *shrugs* I just don't think I share that many fandoms with the Nine Worlds attendees, the Book track is amazing but full of authors I've never read and the fandom track has tended to be full of conversations I've had many times before.

BUT having said all that it's still nice to be surrounded by fans and I don't go to any other cons at the moment.

(just, if I do go this year no gin... or less free wine :-P)

You might have done, but last summer was just crazy and I may have just missed it. :)

Nine Worlds suits me - I could happily live in the books track, which is usually full of authors I *have* read (or ones I'd be willing to read) - but I can quite easily see that that's not the same for everyone. It works out at quite a lot a money to just be hanging out with friends!

(but this is half the fun of the con! Maybe just not on the same night? (or maybe just not when you *coughIcough* want to talk to an author you *coughIcough* have a massive crush on *g*))

I'm still waiting on my PIN as well, but currently playing the 'which books do I buy (if I haven't already) because some of them might turn up in the Hugo ebooks thing?' game.

If you do end up nominating stuff for 1941, please post something about what it is you've nominated? I've probably read stuff (back in the day, when I was working my way through my brother's SF collection as a teenager, if not since) so would be interested to know what's eligible and doesn't suck donkeyballs.

As for the fan artist stuff, try here for starters and see if anyone works for you: http://hugonoms2015.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Best_Fan_Artist

That wiki is helping me organise my thoughts on nomination, if nothing else, though it's still the big pit of way too much stuff to be readable by any one person who has to do things like work for a living.
