Started learning our Christmas music at choir last night- we're singing No Small Wonder which I absolutely adore but which is (unsurprisingly) quite hard.
The piece we are singing on Saturday (Born a King, John W Peterson) has about six bars where the sopranos have to divide. The poor dears all looked terrified and sang the top part because *tune*. We altos sung our part. The director noticed the lack of second sop part and nominated several people to do it, and they have only just, this week, got through it without collapsing (although I think a couple of them were miming). We would have volunteered some alto support, but there are only 5 of us this year compared to 16 of them...
That happens quite a lot- we do have second sopranos and they sound great but they're all quite nervous so if the "lead" isn't there they tend to revert to the tune *g*
