And so my complete set of the original History Boys is finished! Ever since Mum & Dad went to see the play without me I've been (more than) mildly miffed and this seemed like a good quest to make up for that. It took me ten years but then it wasn't exactly a consistent effort and it's been a lot of fun along the way ( Read more... )

I still can't work out a non-patronising way of saying this, but I felt like sometimes some of the dialogue sounded like something a young person would think older adults would say in this sort of situation, rather than what they would actually say. I still liked the play overall, but sometimes it was a bit stilted. (Although we did see it in about the second or third preview so IDK.)

That's a good point actually, it was still very stilted when we saw it so I think it's a product of the play rather than the performances/production. We attributed it to it being one of her first plays- it sounds like someone with a lot of points to make but who hasn't learned how to write proper dialogue and/or hasn't learned that sometimes less is more but you're right it also had an edge of over formality which could be someone writing as they think adults speak.
